I did this through a lateral career move. Started in sales SDR/Coordinator and then spun that into a recruiter role, which changed to HR coordinator, hr generalist and now a benefits specialist role.
My advice is get the experience where you can build complimentary, transferable skills and then you need to sell your way into the lateral (hr) role.
But build business experience in other areas - it will help you as a person and future manager, plus you can learn along the way.
My goal is HR Manager and eventually COO or CHRO, so I try to learn everything I can.
Great Advice!
Good luck in your future role as CHRO!
Best advice anyone can give you is don’t get into HR. Job market is stacked against you, way too many talented people looking for work. You have no chance of “getting your foot in the door.”
Agreed! Find functional work that interests you (i.e., Operations, Accounting, Safety, etc.) and go for entry level positions in that field. HR is not where you want to spend your career if you can avoid it. Way too much talent out here languishing on the sidelines, and AI is only going to make it worse.
I totally understand you. As a fresh grad, it was frustrating to see entry level positions asking for minimum 2 years of experience.
If you are looking and can’t get into HR positions, try starting from admin positions. As it is similar, you’ll be able to bring a lot of transferrable skills over that’ll give you an advantage against others.
Ignore requirements and just apply anyway. I got my first HR role over people with experience because I was the only person who could use an electric typewriter (obviously many years ago)
I volunteered as a recruiter for 3day startup and a work readiness program. I helped people prepare for interviews and conducted resume review with them. In my previous roles, I found HR work applied internally to roles that would help me leverage my skills. I also worked as an HR Assistant part time outside of my regular full time role. I would suggest to do your research on what job title you eventually want to move into and look at what the salary is long term. I eventually moved up in HR and now work in corporate HR at a large healthcare institution.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for HR Specialists is projected to grow about 6% from 2024–2034, which is faster than the average occupation, with roughly 81,800 openings per year.
