I think people love substack because it’s pure content from a voice/person/group they love that hasn’t been ruined by advertising. No one is clamoring to pay monthly SunChips long essay hot takes.
Yes! I’d rather pay for a Substack than have those writers need to lean into brand deals / sponsored content as a means to make a living. It’s a way to support while keeping the content untainted from corporate influence.
You reminded me that it was one of my goals to start my own substack, so thanks for that! I believe the problem is that not too many people like reading anymore. It's a niche, and it's hard to get major brands' followings to come to terms with having to read. Sad but true.

Not sure which one came first, but Substack always kind of reminded me of Patreon. When the Youtube monetization apocalypse happened, a lot of people started on Patreon to help monetize the work and also to just be more authentic. I’m not on either a lot, but see the value they can have for both sides.
