Maternity leave is almost over. Thinking of leaving biglaw for a fully remote counsel role at a firm that’s at the bottom of the Am100. Bad move?

I’m currently at a firm that is Band 1 for my practice area but we now have to be in the office 4 days a week. I’m a senior associate. I’ve really enjoyed being home these last few months. As a mom of four, being fully remote would be clutch while my kids are still young. The counsel role is at a firm that is not a leader in my practice area. It will be a huge downgrade in terms of working on sophisticated matters.

I work at firm that’s not considered biglaw because it’s not market salary (though it does get close) but still has a ridiculous hours demand. It’s not prestigious but they let me be permanently remote and be on a reduced hours schedule and it’s been life changing for work life balance.

Better than quitting for sure.

I wouldn’t consider working full time or in an office until my kids are in college TBH.

I also worked at a midlaw firm with zero clout in my practice area for 3 years when my kids were tiny then easily pivoted to midlaw once they hit ES.

*pivoted to BigLaw

I moved into the Am Law 200 after having kids and I’ve been really happy. If I was still at my original V20 I would have quit the law by now.

I can’t imagine doing four days in office at a market paying firm with four kids. I’m sure some unicorn could handle it, but personally I’d end up a bad lawyer and a bad mom.

Make sure that you talk to women with children at the potential new firm. If they’re happy to connect you to several, you’re in a good place. If they’re hem and haw about it, or the few they drudge up seem miserable, keep looking for a different landing place.

How many therapists (and social workers too!) see a therapist themselves? Do you find it helpful?
I think there's this myth that therapists have all their own sh*t figured out, and for me at least I know that's far from true (hopefully it isn't just me). On the contrary, I think we should be leading by example!

Other than losing out on the bonus, what else happens if you don’t meet your billable target for a year)? A number of associates at my firm miss their target and it doesn’t appear to be an issue.

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?
