I do. I think we need to see them even more than people who don't work in the environments we do.
One of the first things my mentor told me was to find my own therapist before starting to see patients/clients.
I'm a firm believer in "practicing what you preach," so yes - I do have a therapist of my own. Honestly, I don't know how I would have navigated half the stuff in my life without her.
In my country it is mandatory. I find it very helpful, sometimes you really need to vent how you feel about certain patients so you can work on being a little more objective. Some patients have really awful stories and some even trigger my own past trauma.
I truly feel like I need to search for my own therapist, thank for bringing this up
Same, I think it's key to protect ourselves in this field - no one else will do it for us!
Feel like you've got to see a therapist if you are one. How do you expect to be enlightened with new strategies if you're only focused on your own output? That's just my opinion; need consistent therapy to row and evolve.
Yeah, but you'd be surprised with how inspired I am from my client feedback. That's where I am normally enlightened with new strategies. I DO think it's a good idea for therapists to see therapists but I don't deem it imperative.
With all the cases I am exposed to in my field of work, I don't think I'd be able to handle much of it if I disn't go to a therapist to help me manage all that I'm carrying mentally and emotionally. I think it should be a must.
I do and know other social workers who do as well. For me it is important to be able to process my own issues to best serve my community and for my own mental health!
You got that one right! After the emotional roller coaster you have to go through after engaging with clients the whole entire week, you can only imagine how negatively it can affect you.
I have in the past and it's great. Practice what you preach. There is nothing wrong with seeing a therapist. Also, the stuff we deal with on a daily basis is enough to put us in therapy ourselves.
