I think about it too sometimes and I don’t have an answer but I try to steer clear of projects with banks for example.
Work hard, prove yourself to be a team player and be a strong communicator. Push to rise up through the corporate ranks and yes definitely stay away from haram (alcohol etc) but don’t distract yourself with every single thing. Nothing wrong with consulting.
Early on in my career I got carried away with these too many things which in reality were just an easy justification for me to be lazy and introvert at work.
This is the very opposite of what I think I should do. To be frank. But that’s for sharing your life experience and advice.
I will refuse to work on clients that don’t align with my values like alcohol, lottery, tobacco.
Don’t really believe in haram income tbh in that sense. To me as long as you’re not deceiving others to get it you’re fine. Such as selling illegal substances, human trafficking, etc.
For example…Interest income is helping out people in the modern day, lending money to allow others to achieve their personal or business goals is so rewarding on both fronts. I feel like the concept of interest is haram is severely outdated and impractical nowadays.
I wouldn’t put defense contractors in that either as majority of the money they make is used to defend our country from foreign threats that are our enemies, i.e. terrorism. I would actually put that is a noble industry of work tbh because it is actually cleaning up most of the bad that exists in our home countries such as US involvement in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan which have eliminated dictators, cleared extremist political rule, and ultimately gave freedom to millions of people.
Back after some weeks.
This was not a post aimed at shaming anyone, or calling for some mass exodus. We are all in charge of ourselves.
I have no qualms about the quality or quantity of my work. (Ok I do, but that’s more my own self growth standards/gaps rather than me short-changing the firm).
Something from a recent khutba has stayed with me: aiding an oppressor, even in the smallest way, is still sharing in their oppression.
Surah Hūd (11:113):
“And do not incline toward those who do wrong, lest the Fire touch you, and you have no protectors other than Allah, nor shall you be helped.”
Imām al-Ṣādiq ():
“Beware of assisting the oppressor, even if it is as small as sharpening his pen. Whoever does so will be raised with that oppressor on the Day of Judgment.”
When I think about our work in big consulting firms, it feels like we do far more than just “sharpening the pen.” Our projects are often about smoothing the way for global corporations — sometimes at the expense of vulnerable people or entire regions. The money we’re paid isn’t neatly separated by client either; it’s pooled, redistributed, and we all benefit from it.
For me, this isn’t about judging anyone else. It’s about my akhirah. It’s about jannah or jahannam, and asking myself honestly: where are the red lines? What would the Prophet do? What guidance has he already given us?
When I read some of these strategy reports — “streamlining exports,” “reducing political friction,” “unlocking emerging markets” — I can’t help but hear echoes of the same old colonial project, just dressed in modern business language. And that scares me.
I raise it here because “ there’s nothing new under the sun “, so I’m positive someone has thought/felt/pondered the same
I relate, OP. I think the lines like this will continue to blur, but we as Muslims know this world is not the final abode and there will continue to be chaos in the world. I have a question for you - outside of your work, how do you spend your time? Last year instead of thinking I need to find a job that fulfills everything for me - I started volunteering and doing more with my time. I still avoid any projects that don’t align with my values, but how I spend my time more has given me a greater sense of direction
