My boss repeatedly asked me how old I was and started making comments about my appearance. Then she kept asking me where I was born and questions about exactly where I live not just the nearest landmark or city. Everywhere I go my bosses or white coworkers mention my race and what I look like. Its always incredibly invasive and stressful. I'm looking for the unicorn job that doesn't need to racialize every interaction or keep talking about my appearance.

Where’s your HR in all this?

like

Hr is sometimes the people asking me these questions so I don't much bother reporting anymore.

If OP is getting bothered by this it’s understandable because what they may be thinking is that people are trying to find out if they’re legal or not depending on where they are.
Why not let that conversation come around naturally instead of digging at it - where are you from? No, where are you really from? Where were your parents living? These are invasive questions - when the peer is ready to let you know that they will.

And if these little snide comments are being made, that is absolutely over the line.

As a hiring manager, I don’t give a shit if you live with your parents and you’re 33 or not.

Do you have a legitimate address? Will you get to work on time every day and do the job? That’s all I care about when I’m trying to hire somebody.

If they’re trying to find out if you live with your parents, that’s none of their fucking business and has nothing to do with you applying for the job.

You should get a lawyer or at least hire an HR consultant to navigate this. If you are indeed getting fired because are not interested in discussing your race or background you should sue and you need to be coached on how to document the interactions and evidence. Unfortunately workplace bullying is real but it comes with legal ramifications. Learn the laws that apply in your state and policies in your company. Do not leave empty handed.

Genuine question, is it offensive to be asked where you live or are from, if it’s coming from a genuine place? I am truly interested in my co workers backgrounds, even white colleagues for example I work with a man from Ireland originally and his wife is from Eastern Europe we often talk about that. I have another co work who doesn’t really talk about places he’s lived, I accept that and don’t pry. But would love the feedback :)

I'm not sure most people care about being pointed out for their differences but if they do its not personal against you. Its because they've been objectified or interrogated. For example the first question people ask me is my race and class, it does nothing to make me feel as if they're interested in being my friend. But its because I've had jobs turned down for not answering and people on the street have gotten mad when I've said, I'm from here. So we're sometimes scared and the trauma adds up.

You are in a tough situation

Race should never be brought up. It is illegal I believe

I've had a past employer ask me if I was anorexic. Im naturally slim and I told her no I'm not but if I were you will never know because I don't really trust you with any sort of my personal information. Why does she want to know so badly? Make sarcastic replies when she does that in the mindset of stupid questions get stupid answers.an example would be 1. Where are you born? Say in the country of nome of your business. Lol. Sounds childish but in this case it can get your point across. Have a come to jesus meeting with her and confront her about it. That does create a hostile environment.

Have you thought about going to HR? That sounds like a really inappropriate conversation and questions to be asking. I am sorry that happened to you.
