Their government websites usually have useful info you can probably also find some good insights from Reddit / AI.
I would probably try having an extended tour in those places before you decide. Meet with some local people and get their insights.
You might want to check the websites of the embassies of the various nations, they may have information about travel and emigration. Or contact a consulate if there's one in your city. You can't assume that you'd be able to go to another company and become a permanent resident. Given the number of Americans becoming disillusioned with the country's direction, I imagine people in embassies and consulates are familiar with answering any questions you would have.
Canada
I immigrated to Australia from the US. My path was through my Australian spouse.
At a high-level, your visa options are as follows:
- Partner visa if you fall in love with an Australian
- Employer-sponsored visa, which requires an occupation on the ever-changing Skilled Occupation list (I have seen very few employers sponsor, and of those, many are unwilling to sponsor PR)
- Student visa, but you must be under 35 for the the visa to work after graduation (unless a PhD), and then seeking an employer-sponsored visa
- Working Holiday, but you must be 18-30, it’s designed for work in hospitality, and requires 3 months of farm work to renew for another year for a max of 3 years
There are also direct PR pathways that mirror the Skilled Occupation list. Applicants’ qualifications are translated into points and state governments invite those with highest number of points in the skilled occupations they need. It’s a waiting game that might never end. Regional Australia PR tends to have a shorter wait than general PR because less people want to live outside of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
Thank you very much for your thoughtful response to this. I really appreciate the insight you've provided. As I've been married for nearly 20 years, I have a feeling my spouse might object to me falling in love with and subsequently marrying an Australian lol. But, you never know I suppose. Maybe I will find opportunity through employment.
Thanks again!
I would seriously recommend to rent a place, a stay there for 6 months, at least. I know three families that followed a similar path, and each of them decided to come back, in most cases due to financial reasons, or cultural incompatibility with local folks.
