My general impression is that tech companies hire more senior L/E counsels (5-6 YOE) instead of junior ones (3-4 YOE). Is this true, especially at FAANG? Thanks!

Absolutely true. Most places need one L/E counsel, max one to two L/E counsels per region. The more dynamic the company, the more likelihood for L/E disasters that they’d prefer someone more experienced to handle. But more like 10-12 or 12-15 year senior, 5-6 is more mid level imo.

I went in house as a 9th year and agree. The stuff I advise on I probably would not have the chops to handle as a third year.

Do I accept a job position in an area that I’m unsure if I like because I haven’t really practiced in it as much but the pay is really good? Or do I stay in a job position that allows me to work in the area that I think I’m interested in staying in long term but the pay is much lower? For reference I am a third year.

My supervisor gave me 8hours of AWOL because I couldn't show up one day because I was under anxiety. I have gave him letters from psychiatrist, psychologist that I'm passing through this. He didn't care and gave me an AWOL. I want to leave my job because my department is very toxic but I don't want to leave having that on my records.
If I move to another job later on (private or federal) this 8 hours of AWOL will show up?

I've become really jaded about consulting. I find all so often you need to tell the client what they want to hear to keep their business and I feel like so much of the what I recommend doesn't actually get implemented. I'm looking to make a career switch so I can both create and execute on my strategies. A product management path seems very promising for this.

Does anyone who switched from consulting to product management have any recommendations of h helpful PM books, courses, or programs?

Practicing 11 years at larger regional firm. Experience is L&E, complex commercial litigation, products, contract disputes, trade secret litigation (really varied on the litigation side). What types of in-house positions might I be qualified for? Considering a switch.

Been on my mind for a while, all thoughts welcome!
So I’m gonna assume that most of us in L&E are in it for the passion, otherwise we would have taken corporate commercial or M&A for the money.
So… where do you see your ‘ultimate resting spot’? Would it be 1) global head of L&E law at a big company, having to always be under the global GC, or 2) just collect enough experience to take the GC route? This of course has way more money, but work with stuff that doesn’t excite you as much, or 3)…?
