Portugal does a digital nomad visa. They're one of the most foreigner friendly in Europe. There's a hub of others in Lisbon and many speak English, but obviously learn Portuguese. As an American definitely learn as much about the culture as possible. Many things we do here are not socially acceptable in Europe. You'll learn as you go. Europe is amazing. Job-wise... It may behoove you to get a remote position in the USA where they let you work abroad and then apply for an annual visa as a digital nomad. They basically want to see that you can support yourself and will not be looking for a job/income while there. They do a similar visa for retired people and students. Basically in exchange for a visa you stimulate their economy with foreign money. It's all on their website. I hope it goes well for you and your husband!
Amsterdam is the near perfect city for a European expat experience. Everyone speaks English, Anglo Saxon work culture (low drama as opposed to Latin work cultures) and great work life balance.
The Netherlands also has 30% tax benefit for expats for first 6 years which makes it the best tax friendly destination (May be outside some Swiss cantons and Portugal).
I’ve been in Paris for the last 4 years (with very basic French). Though it’s a fantastic city to experience, there are many things that could and will frustrate someone moving out of their home country for the first time.
I'm planning to move to France next year with my French spouse... any advice around work/culture?
