I’ve done this twice but I never had to move for it… is the client in a good location? Are you able to pack up and move? Do you still pay rent at your current place? Know you mentioned they’d pay for your housing there… think it might be worth it if you’re able to do it and it’s a cool city but I’d write a pros and cons list.
I liked being embedded as it was very fun to be the client and it’s less stressful than agency life. I wouldn’t move though, but I own a house and have a dog.
I'll have to pay rent at my current place but my company puts me up in a rental while on the secondment. So its kind of a wash in that regard. I do have to pay for food though so I'll still have a regular grocery bill.
I'm lucky that it is just me so its not like I'm leaving behind pets or a family. But will miss out on some stuff with friends.
Sounds like quite the upheaval.
If single, no kids or pets to tie you down, may be an adventure and a great learning experience/opportunity to add to your professional story.
Weigh the upside and challenges.
Yeah I think it could be a fun adventure but it is definitely an upheaval.
Everyone I’ve known who did this ended up being hired by the client, so if you’re looking to go in-house then it could be a good move. That being said, with kids I wouldn’t want to be gone for that long
This sounds like an interesting client and I wouldn't mind working for them but I'm not sure I'd want to stay in their market long term if that makes sense.
If this helps you get the skills needed for further development against your career goals, it could be a good opportunity. You will be exposed to client side - will help you transition to client or improve your skills in client service. It gives you an opportunity to have a stronger connection to your client - therefore making you more valuable to the agency and lowers risk of layoff. On the flip side, if the role is no longer needed by the client, you have a higher risk of layoff. You have to assess this opportunity against your personal career goals and your ability and desire to move temporarily. If you decide to take the role, I would negotiate a severance package as part of the move. You don't want to find yourself having moved for work and then laid off.
The severance package point is valid. I want to make sure I'm guaranteed a role when I get back.
Some of my accounts would likely change when the secondment concludes so that has me a little worried.
Do it. You'll want to work in-house one day, and this experience can be your way in. You're qualified either way, but it will help you make the argument.
I think I'm going to go for it!
Should also note that while my housing would be covered, I still have rent in my current lease. I'm young and single though so its not like I'm leaving behind a partner for 6 months. It may be a fun adventure. But also interested in understanding some of the professional implications and things I may not be thinking about.
do it. Great on your CV. Means they think you are really good and will keep client happy.
