That in the end, they don’t care and the only that matters is that it provided a living to raise their family.
Both spent decades working in specialized field in scientific research (being intentionally vague). My mother in particular spent all 30 years working for the same person. You would think they would have a cordial relation but in the end even that turned into a dispute
Both were strict “tiger” parents growing up who were pushed me to get good grades, good colleges, career. In the last 10 years, their perspective changed on all of it. One parent admitted their biggest regret it working so much.
Now they are enjoying their lives, volunteering, becoming friends with other retirees. No stress.

What I’ve learned - the key is - working when and how you want to.
Work can be valuable and give you a sense of purpose and community. The issue in the US at least is when it becomes all encompassing and you forget why you’re even achieving and trying so hard.
I don’t think I’ll ever “retire” in the traditional sense but I definitely won’t be chasing the next promotion (or whatever) at the cost of my personal life. It’s really personal and dependent on what makes sense for you.

My Dad regretted retiring
My father shared the same sentiment after running his own business for decades and finally retiring. He wished he had done things differently while also recognizing his hard work supported his family.

It's easy to say you would do it differently once you have achieved setting yourself up to retire. But what specific thing would they have changed or sacrificed? They wish they didn't have a financially stable retirement now?
