Can you move seats? How big of a company is this?
That sounds really tough. I’d try to set boundaries by calmly and neutrally addressing the comment with something like, “I don’t think that’s appropriate” or “Let’s keep it professional.” If it continues, you could consider reporting it to HR. Protect your peace without letting them off the hook.
Yeaaa document from the beginning
That’s such a tough spot. I think I’d try to distance myself, like throw on my headphones and stay super focused. If it kept happening, though, I’d probably document it and talk to HR. Quietly, but yeah.
Would you ever approach them or no?
Just tell them to knock it off. Seriously, don't worry about being too gentle. Tell them knock it off, put a lid on it, I don't want to hear it, and so on. Deliver a blunt message. You can't change the person, but you can make it clear you don't appreciate their commentary and you don't want to be a participant.
Do you think people receive bluntness well though?
Document and report to HR…
