Need opinions! I’m trying to get out of my company ASAP. (Passed over multiple times for promotion for them to hire outside applicants)
I was offered a position elsewhere (I don’t really want it)
Would you accept it and put in your notice or wait for the job you really want that you may or may not get? I asked the hiring manager for a couple days to think about it as I have other opportunities I’m exploring currently.

Had a very similar circumstance this past summer. It was down to two jobs and I ended up getting my top choice so I left my current place after 6 years. Turned out to be a nightmare and I wish every day that I would have stayed.

If you've got an offer, and you really want to leave your current job, perhaps you should move on. Waiting and hoping to land a better opportunity is understandable, but in this job market it may not be a wise move. You might regret passing up the offer you have in hand.

Don’t leave out of spite if you aren’t excited about the new offer, you might just end up at another job you hate

Having an offer gives you some security, should you decide to move on now. However, it doesn’t give you security that it will be the most ideal opportunity. What job offer really ensures that anyway? Whether you accept this current offer depends entirely upon how much you want to leave this place. For me personally, if the only issue I was faced with was being passed up for a promotion, I would stick around until I find a better position.

Honestly? I would lok at pay, benefits, does the work environment seem like one you'd rather be in verses your current job but more importantly being passed over can be hard especially if it's happened more than once keep your head up and do what you feel is best .

So my first piece of advice I would give to you would be to maybe take a breath and take a step bath to figure out exactly why you want to get out of your company ASAP. Being passed up for a promotion isn’t a good enough reason, all that means is that maybe you just weren’t as good as you think you are… And that is a big problem for you if you leave a company you represented yourself as something better than the reality, now you’re going to go to a new company where you have no track record and might end up having a very letdown and disappointed employer. Sometimes people have to just understand that being passed out for a Promotion isn’t a demerit on the company, sometimes it’s just blatantly you needing to step it up and get a little better before you’re ready for a promotion. Being at the company for X amount of years is not grounds for a promotion. And just “working hard “is not going to get you a better position in the company. Sometimes you need to actually talk to the person who made the decision to pass you over and ask them to explain why you were being passed over for these promotions. If you don’t have the experience and they pass me over for somebody who does, can you really blame them for going outside the company?

How does the pay compare to your current company? If it's the same or better, I'd go ahead and take it. You can always continue interviewing and applying to better fits and accept any offer that comes in. You'd be burning the bridge with the new company, sure, but sometimes that's worth doing.

I left my last job because I got passed over twice and was expected to teach the person who got the job and became my boss various things. I took a pay cut to leave but it was the right decision for me. It appears your company has made its position on your advancement clear. If you want to advance you have to move on. Be sure to tell them why you are leaving.

D’s. S

Depends on how desperate you are to leave. If you don’t really want the position, then the only benefit to this would be if you had a competing offer to somewhere you want to go. Then you could negotiate. Or you can use this offer to try to negotiate at your current company. Sometimes that can backfire though - depends on the culture.
