You might have put yourself into a somewhat lower range that what you could have asked for, but that may work out in your favor. What you don't want to do is eliminate yourself at the outset by asking for too much and seeming unserious, and you haven't done that. And, as you indicate, it's a first conversation. As the process continues and you learn more about the job responsibilities, and you're able to talk in more detail about your experience, you could be able to negotiate upward into the $41-$50/hr range.
This is one of the reasons I always ask what their range is and try to avoid giving a number first. However, until it’s on paper, you can still negotiate. I’d be asking for closer to $45 per hour, and that’s actually on the lower end.
