McKinsey & Company Hey folks!
Was wondering what sort of life sciences projects does usually the Boston Consulting Group and McKinsey & Company take on?
Commercial, access and pricing, M&A, transformation, implementation? (all of them perhaps?)
Basically, what would someone with an LS background be mainly working on in these firms on a day-to-day basis?
Thanks!

Lmao, the first year is always kinda special
It’s kind of tough because a lot these folks are still kids just super excited about their jobs. Is it a little cringe? No doubt. But it’s kinda cool to see them happy and stuff. I think it gets weird when they try to flex things like a free office lunch or something but it’s whatever lol
He’s got no real following so far, but you’re right who knows maybe in the future he will, but unfortunately corporate influences that are gen z are far less popular than they were for say millennials, which can be seen by the comments
As an older Gen Z do I find it a little cringe? Sure. But that kid probably spent endless hours applying and interviewing and it paid off; he's excited. In this case it costs no money to let people enjoy things
It's a way to show off while not seeming 110% like a show-off. He's just mimicking influencers; that's what the younger gen is growing up with.
Tbh I wish I could go back to being an intern and freshly starting out. Everything was so new. Actually felt exciting to be working making money. Now a few years in it feels so numb and repetitive.
Oh 100% i wish I could go back to that too
An alternative perspective I’d like to offer as a 2021 grad who joined a consulting firm after my spending my first year after grad in job in industry— this is someone who is clearly excited about his job. As I’m sure you know the job market is not exactly booming, so I wonder if this individual is especially excited to have a job - especially a prestigious one as you mentioned - and wants to share it.
And like it or not TikTok is how a lot of gen Zers consume content and information. I’d actually argue these videos encourage more folks to apply to consulting companies (whether that’s good or bad is not for me to decide)
I’d leave you with a couple questions I’d encourage you to think about:
Why do you assume having this account and posting work videos has anything to do with his work ethic? With his ability to deliver strong work to clients?
(Also to your comment about him offering referrals to people he doesn’t know - … have you read all of the posts on fishbowl asking for referrals??)
That is fair, I’m sure he’s very excited to have a job, but idk it just felt off. He doesn’t seem staffed, but if you were a manager would you want to see your new associates vlogging their whole day in this manner? Me personally no but to each their own.
And you’re right I have no clue what he brings to the table, but that was me more or so going off my gut feeling seeing as the 2 other videos I saw were him saying all he does is use excel and that he’s not staffed yet (however that could just be due to lots of associates)
And ohhh yeah i’ve seen the referrals all over here, but it’s far different when you’re a 2 month experienced first year associate who physically cannot give those out (unless EY is diff from other firms)
My issues with this…
1) You’re scrolling on TikTok. Takes one to know one? I thought we would all silently avoid that app completely after watching China scrape up old Vine code to shamelessly monitor foreign interests. I don’t understand the motivation to be on it if you’re not a naive kid yourself.
2) He’s not doing anything wrong, and you’re judging him a lot anyway. He has 2 months YOE so no one takes his recommendations seriously so what’s it matter if he gives out random recs? Only makes him look committed to the firm. If you come from lesser means or blue collar work, things like free food and beautiful aesthetics are truly exciting and it’s not about status or flexing. I don’t see any flexing happening he’s just shocked that these things are available. ESPECIALLY in this economy. Downsizes and bank closures left and right, it makes the experience so much more wholesome.
3) You framed it as if I’d watch a video of some tragic outcome as a result of hiring a kid fresh out of college and it’s just a kid being excited to work. That kind of attitude is what deters folks from office work and makes so many dismiss people with 9-5’s as jaded and hyper judgmental. This is extremely judgmental. It’s one of the things I personally dislike about working in this space, everyone walks on eggshells trying to appear professional and get mocked at the slightest “um”. You assert he’s unprofessional merely for vlogging his experience, not actually because real mistakes were made, no vulgar statements, no secrets disclosed or anything of the sort. He’s simply being hawked for filming at all.
My solution…
Relax. And if you can’t, send it to EY’s HR department. Don’t post it on Fishbowl thinking we’ll all agree with you and make fun of some kid like a collegiate groupchat, that’s a wild way to approach dissatisfaction with the video. If you want to frame it in the way you did, I’d FULLY expect an article or material evidence of lack of preparedness or skill to justify why companies are pushing back start dates. This, in turn, makes me feel like you wasted my time looking into this rather than the kid having a good first couple months. I’m walking away from this feeling that you wasted my time by interesting me in information left undelivered.
Sounds like you just don’t like the guy and posting the video might as well be a submission to EY’s HR. I don’t care enough to troll through his account, reading comments and seeing what else he vlogs, but they probably do. As I said if you have a problem with it, tell the right people and go about your business. This app isn’t a trashy group chat used to make fun of people. I don’t see why you’d post and involve the entire ecosystem in the vlogs of one single guy to be used as a narrative blanket for an entire generation. It seems you fail to realize most of us don’t care about TikToks. Its so odd that you’d do all this research and display it for every consultant across every firm to see, defending your point and reasoning for why it’s unprofessional and flexing just to say you don’t care to send it to HR as if this isn’t effectively the same thing partnered with highlighting it for laughs at their expense. I think you should just send HR an anonymous tip and go about your day.
I mean you’re entitled to your opinion, but I feel like the question that really needs to be asked is why are you pocket watching what he’s doing? It may be cringe but it’s no no harm no foul, and it has no reflection on the work he’s producing.
because it popped up on my fyp and i watched it? then i thought it was pretty unprofessional and cringe, but yes he’s offering referrals to people he doesn’t know along with other things from what I saw just from a few east scrolls, maybe 3 mins of my time
And what's so bad about this? I think it's cute. Just because you're jaded doesn't mean the newbies can't be excited about work
for me it was more or so this video along with others, seems less excited about the job and more about the status and perks that come with it, which i mean fair i guess
Are we supposed to understand the correlation you’re drawing?
makes sense, I think for me that was more my gripe less than their excitement. They seemed much more infatuated with the supposed “status” consultants have and they unironically dress up as patrick bateman. I’m all for enjoying your job just felt a bit much and unprofessional, which is something i’ve noticed with this wave of new/over hires coming in waves from the post covid boom
Someone said “just withdrew my application from EY”😭😭😭
The video was removed by the time I got here (hopefully not due to OP) so I haven’t seen the video, but I can guess the type of video it was and I’m so pleasantly surprised at everyone in these comments defending the guy. Love to see letting people enjoy things!
Maybe I shouldn’t be surprised by anyone but OP though, because this, FB, is work social media after all.
It’s people like you that I wish I never encounter in my professional life. Why are you so pressed that someone created a vlog? Do you have nothing better to do with your life but police other people. OP seems like the type of person whose entire personality is work. Do you not have family? Friends? Hobbies? Get a life.
Life is all sparkles, unicorns, and rainbows when you first start and aren’t staffed for 2 months. Then hell descends 😅
yeahhhh, doing nothing but random trainings and getting paid like you’re working is fun until yearly reviews roll around and that low utilization mixed with an influx of associates leads to the 🪓
That’s a paddlin.
The TikTok is no longer available, but I’ve seen a lot of videos like these (judging from the comments), I think it comes down to a few things:
1) Covid Grads
I graduated in 2022, my entire junior year & therefore most of my internships were online. I missed out on simple in-person activities like company socials, networking events, and free lunches. Instead of experiencing this at my internships, it was diverted to my first job, where I’m sure I was a little glossy-eyed for even routine activities like lunches.
2) Background
I come from a blue-collar family in Nowhere, USA - I was really proud of myself for being able to work in a decently-paid, big city job right out of school. I did not have any exposure to corporate culture growing up, and certainly not with the benefits and pay of large consulting firms.
3) Corporate culture in the US is so draining compared to our friends in Western Europe. If someone is happy at their job and is excited to work, all the more power to them! Even if it’s “cringe.” If we’re honest, I think some of the negative pushback around stuff like this is rooted in jealousy (not saying you, just in general)!
EY used Teams?!?!?!? 💀💀💀💀
I will be charging you for that 2 mins of cringe
i’ll send over a code in a sec
You must be the reason they don’t stay
nah we silently lay them off before i can get to them
