I think some parents overcomplicate bed time routines early on that make it difficult later on. I fully understand that every baby/kid/situation is different, but in most cases, kids don’t need a full bath, massage, story, and being rocked to sleep every night.
I used to call it a “drive by” when I put my first to bed because I would literally lay her down in the crib with a bottle when she was old enough to hold it herself and walk out, then just watched the monitor til she fell asleep.
I agree! Too much pressure gets applied. Consistency is more important than elaborate routine. And what works for your family may change over time and that is OK.
Give yourself a lot of grace and simplify simplify simplify
Also think about anything that you enjoy for the evening routine whether it’s for your toddler, the infant or yourself and make sure you have that stuff where it’s easy for you to access. if you need lip balm or water or a mini fridge upstairs so you don’t have to run downstairs now is the time to do the stuff that makes your life easier
Thiiisss, mini fridge and (unfortunately) a TV upstairs were a gamechanger in this stage.
Also phone a friend I feel like this is one area that Moms sometimes don’t ask for help where they may have someone in their life who would love to be of service. do you have any friends or family who could make a weekly visit at bedtime to help you with this routine? It may help restore some of your sanity and also give that friend or family member special bonding time with the kids. even if you could get somebody to support you with that one or two nights a week. It could be a really beautiful way to get some help in this time.
Keep bedtimes simple and combine where possible! So get both in PJs (we don’t do baths every night), read a book all together, then depends on age. When my baby was tiny, would wear him while getting the toddler to sleep. Now, older one is 4, so I set him up with legos or something while I get the baby down. Also - get ok with some compromises. Like maybe older one goes to bed a bit earlier, or gets a little TV in the evening - if it works for you don’t feel bad!!

depending on how old your infant is, you can try wearing them for the toddler routine in a wrap or a carrier sling or make sure that you have an infant chair in a convenient place so you can set them down safely while you’re focused on your toddler
