Wow, I’m sorry you’re dealing with that! It's a good move, though. You don’t have to tolerate rudeness just because someone’s older. Setting a clear, respectful boundary like that shows strength. Does anyone else feel the same way? You might need to tell your manager.

And these are the people who get all butthurt if you aren't sufficently thankful to them.
I actually heard it said that the older generation wants to hear you're welcome, and not no problem, because they want to be acknowledged, and respectfully so. Whilst younger people look at helping them to be part of the job, expected of them, and not a problem.
Honestly, good on you for setting that boundary. Some people think age gives them a free pass to be disrespectful, but there’s no excuse for treating someone like that. I like your approach—calm, direct, and firm. Have you noticed if they actually change their behavior when you call it out like that?
I have experienced this many times. I think they get to a point where they just don't care anymore and that includes caring enough to have manners. I hope I never get to that point honestly.

Honestly, I've had it both ways with the elder generations. Sometimes they've threatened to report me to the FBI, and sometimes they've talked to me for over an hour telling me their life story. I've found it boils down to delivery. Of course it depends on the customer, but just showing respect and patience can really go a long way. Defy their expectations of our younger generation.
