I've been freelance for 14 years. Burnout as a freelancer has everything to do with your own willingness to set boundaries. Without the stability of a traditional job, it's very easy to get anxious about financial instability and work yourself to the bone when times are good. I've met many people who have burnt out from freelancing and gone back to a 9 to 5. I love it, and feel like I have an excellent quality of life, but it took awhile to put limits on myself.
I equate it to people who get to work from home. It’s a huge perk for the right person. You have to have the personality or willingness for it. Some do great on their own, others need more structure.
