Maternity leave is a fact of life and people shouldn’t be penalized for finding new opportunities while on it. More importantly though, you should do what is best for your family and don’t need to feel guilty about it.
I think honesty here is better than telling them you found another opportunity. The latter would look like you were job hunting on parental leave
Nothing wrong with job hunting in may leave and you own no explanation. Especially if moving from firm to in-house. Just say you were presented with an opportunity to pivot and didn’t feel it was an opportunity you could pass up
Would your firm feel guilty firing you? No? Then why would you feel guilty leaving?
Yeah fair lol
Just remember to do what’s right for you, bottom line!

People have been strategically rocking the PTO baby(ies) and quitting when done with mat leave for decades, it’s one of the few ways you can get one up over the firm. You should def explain that baby’s health issues are driving it to maximize your relationship with firm but don’t feel bad

First, I hope your baby is okay. Second, you don't owe anyone an explanation but you could certainly give one here. I had a similar epiphany after my second was born with a heart defect. It made me leave family law which was step one to moving in house. There's no amount of work BS worth your energy when you have a sick kid. Take care of your family #1.
I had a very similar thing happened to me. I just told my firm I had found another job with more work life balance and they were happy for me.
I am surprised at the lack of knowledge here. Of course you can leave any time, but if you are on fmla and receiving benefits, the company can make you repay them if you leave directly after it ends or in the middle. I recommend asking your employer if you can return part-time for a few months to work out arrangements for your child. This gives you time to determine whether you need to leave. Remember, you won’t have fmla for the first year at a new job and you’ll be trying to establish yourself

Big firms give about 18 weeks paid mat leave and last i looked into this their policies usually provide for add’l unpaid leave w/o repayment provision
