Our company just had layoffs, and a coworker I worked closely with was let go. She’s incredibly hardworking, dedicated, and excellent at her job. I can’t help but suspect that the real reason was her willingness to stand up for her team, which may have made her seem difficult in the eyes of upper management. It’s frustrating when advocating for others is seen as a liability. Have you ever seen this happen? Do companies truly value employees who speak up, or is there always a risk?

I got let go in December and was in the same situation as your friend. It’s more common now. I also find that people who speak out and point things out that don’t make sense or why are we going in that direction, essentially not being on the “train” with whatever management is doing at all times are vulnerable to being let go. I’ll do it differently next time for sure.

That’s really tough, and I’m sorry you’re dealing with that. You’re right—it feels like this happens all the time now, and speaking up always seems to come with risks, even when you’re just trying to help. It’s frustrating when upper management asks for your honest opinion but doesn’t actually want to hear the truth. And then, when you question things or ask for clarity, it’s like you’re not “on board” with them. It’s exhausting. I hope you find a place that actually values honesty and different perspectives as it makes such a difference when people really listen.

YouTube and life have taught me that in corporate, you need to be agreeable and go along with upper managements wishes regardless of your personal feelings to have a good experience

Yeah, corporate life often rewards going with the flow, but it’s a tough balance between being agreeable and staying true to yourself...

I'm looking to switch from criminal prosecution to in house. I have a 13 year background in healthcare and white collar fraud investigations. I'm looking to limit litigation (I've tried enough cases) and hopefully increase pay switching from government.

I am getting summarily rejected from a lot of postings and I'm wondering if it's even possible to switch over. Anyone make the jump or have advice on doing work to make the transition?
