Their net carbon impact is usually worse in the short term, but better in the long run (anywhere from 2-15 years depending on your assumptions). Engineering Explained on YouTube does a good explanation of this. I personally say in general it takes about 5 years for a new ev to become carbon 0 vs an identical ice car. But if you count the sunk cost of producing a vehicle, then getting a used car, no matter how environmentally unfriendly it is, is likely to generate less total carbon within the lifetime of the car (i.e you prevent the carbon output from the production of another vehicle).
