Having been a high school secretary for 25+ years, I feel like a big part of the "that's how it's always been done" comes from the administrator. How long has your principal or asst. principal been there? Are they the type who embraces change or resists it? No matter how grand an idea you come up with, if your admin team members are not on board, it probably won't fly. Also, if you do get support in changing up some things, don't change a lot of things at once. Ease into it because people do not like a lot of change, especially all at once. I do not see why you couldn't reach out to other area elementary school secretaries to ask for feedback or advice. I think most people like to share how they do things and feel it's a compliment to be asked how they do "things." It sounds like your secretarial team has been at your school a short time. Given the pandemic and how it's disrupted how things are normally run, I would wait it out a bit before making any huge changes. There is a reason why people do things the way they do that maybe you've not encountered yet simply due to the times we are currently living in. Hope this information helps. If you want to ask any specific questions, post them on this page. Maybe someone who can provide suggestions could help benefit you with advice one way or another. You never know. Take care!
I’m not aware if anything. Usually we talk to other secretaries in the building/district with any questions. I wish there was something more formal.
Our district is small-just three buildings, 1000-1100 kids total in the district. So I just have two other secretaries to talk to. One took the job two years ago, I did right before shut down, and the other started this year. Short of calling other districts and saying Hi can I have your email and ask you questions, I'm just winging it trying to come up w/better ways to do things. I did put a suggestion in to JMC, our computer system, that it would be nice to have a way to contact others.
