Reposting: anxious q- should incoming juniors start thinking of backup plans? Were offers revoked in 08/09? Or start dates pushed? Would be starting at a V10 in lit if that helps. Thanks all.

It’s way too early to tell, because no one knows what the situation will be in the fall with the pandemic, economy as a whole, or flow of legal work. This is a very different situation than 2008 so I’m not sure how useful the comparison is. Sorry not to be more specific but no one knows what will happen even next week, much less next fall.

The answer to your question is yes. Offers were both revoked and extended

Who knows but I don’t think that formulating backup plans is a terrible ideas as a contingency.

Firms are still trying to figure this out. I expect overall hiring will be slightly depressed and that start dates will be pushed out. But no big NY firm can afford to bypass a year of recruiting.

My summer firm just emailed to tell me they’re either going to start the 10 week associate program a few weeks later or just cancel the entire program. (They’re doing it city-by-city though). I was told firms won’t want to train summer associates entirely remotely, so if we’re still WFH in the summer we are all prob doomed.

Foreign LLM student here. I plan to take the NY bar exam in February. I’m thinking of taking a bar prep course (most likely Barbri). They offer two options: the “traditional” course (which lasts around 2.5 months) and an extended 6-month course. The difference in price is substantial – 2.5k for the traditional course vs 6k for the extended one. Any thoughts/recommendations on which one I should take? In case it is helpful, I come from a civil law country. Thanks!

Partners - Do you ever take vacations?

I have been at my current firm for about 1.5 years, and in that entire time the partner in my group hasn't been out of the office a single time. Is that normal? I can't tell if it's standard for big law partners to not take time off, if the dynamics for my group may be different (only 1 partner in the entire group), or it the partner I work with is just a masochist.
