They don’t 😎

Because McKinsey people at my school gave me more of an ick
Not OP, but felt the same thing at my school also
The constant negative ethics scandals I hear about McKinsey
And before people say “all firms do it”: I haven’t seen anything like that at BCG
Plot twist : 95%+ of the ‘I chose X’ people here didn’t get cross-offered and just want to show to the public that their firm is more desired than what it actually is
Coach
Sure 😂 Not even worth discussing this here. Every time it’s been discussed, all MBB colleagues say ‘in my office we win most, source: trust me bro’. If it makes you happier to think that you guys do, then so be it!
It was very office specific for my decision. Bain’s office was relatively new compared to BCG and seemed like it was having trouble breaking into the region and developing local clients, while BCG had been around longer and was well established.
Also, Bain was also more fratty and loose whereas BCG was came off as more professional/mature. Loved the people at both offices and would have still probably enjoyed Bain, but BCG was the better fit.
Then McK just didn’t care to build relationships with me during the recruiting process so they were still an unknown entity come decision time so I wrote them off pretty early on, plus opioids lol.

Bain does office staffing which felt too small, and ethics of McKinsey made me feel uncomfortable

I did not get a McK offer, and a close friend had a terrible first year experience at Bain (nothing unethical just terrible WLB and stress) so I went with BCG
Coach
It’s not good but it’s not horrible - 60-65 per week
(1) McK seems to have a bad rep I didn't want to constantly explain away,
(2) BCG people seemed "cooler," and
(3) my GF said I seemed more excited about my BCG experiences so picked BCG over McK.
I think this answer should be exit plan, office and sector dependent though. My sector is heavily regional (health care) and there was no difference in exit opps and so it came down to brand/office fit for me.
Didn't make it past Bain round 1 but would've picked BCG over it anyways
I applied for all MBBs to play the numbers game and McK was the slowest to provide an interview time slot. I got offers from both BCG and Bain by the time McK had a scheduled time to do the first round interview and I canceled it. Would rather go to BB given the people I know who work at McK from my undergrad cohort were people I would not want to work / be friends with.
Felt like it was a toss up between BCG and Bain but ultimately chose BCG because I don’t enjoy DDs, and I wanted to do some travel.
Shouldn’t
Post-MBA if it matters.
Clicked better with BCG people than Bain people in my target office, and felt like I had clear mentors at BCG vs. Bain. (Despite Bain's reputation, Bain folks were actually more buttoned up and formal, whereas BCG folks were very chill and down to earth.)
I liked the idea of being able to do government work. And my BCG office is much larger and more diversified than the nearby Bain office in terms of industry opportunities.
I still strongly considered Bain due to what I perceived as superior "culture" (which I define not just as people, but as how the org operates, incentive structures for partners, etc). But it felt more amorphous than the other factors.
Only got a final round from McKinsey, but never clicked well with people there + was also put off by their scandals, as well as a more buttoned-up / hardo reputation. I have no doubt that had I gotten the offer, they would have gone into hard sell mode and I may have met more people that I clicked with, but I was ok with the rejection.

Didn’t get an offer from McK, but chose BCG over Bain in Chicago for two main reasons:
1) Happened to speak to people I clicked more with at BCG- not to say Bain didn’t have warm people, but I met fewer people from my background and could relate to how I grew up. BCGers also felt more straight-to-the-point in my conversations.
2) BCG in Chicago did more work in the practice area I saw myself eventually wanting to specialize in. This specifically was very important to me, while being able to do a generalist first 2 years.
Very happy with my choice!
Culture (did regret though)
Why’d u regret
Local Bain office was too small with a very specific type of hires - great bunch but not me.
I worried about having Mck on resume will hurt my chances of getting into humanitarian work in the future
It’s embarrassing but despite above, I did go through the entire recruitment process from all 3 firms and got offers, just to fuel my insecurity
