One of my friends worked with a gal who thought sloppy seconds meant doing a bad second try and she proceeded to use the term in a meeting full of business leaders and higher ups. The legacy is a hilarious anecdote, that's all that will come of this.
Modern smut books a la Fourth Wing have gone mainstream enough where this isn’t that embarrassing (even if you didn’t know what you were admitting to lol). I feel like 90s smut romance books with Fabio on the cover were viewed as more of a guilty pleasure that was judgment worthy and any current embarrassment is holdover from that.
I mean.. I would consider Fourth Wing to be smutty read (and I say this as someone who read it and enjoyed it).
Agreed. The word she was looking for is “pulpy.” But “smut” fits Fourth Wing and similar books (and I like them!).
Follow up question: should I let it be or apologize to the office managing partner and explain I’m just dumb?
lol I don’t know what that word means but I also often misunderstand words and references so when I speak to others or at work I keep my vocabs and wittiness to a minimum unfortunately ….
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Fourth Wing is smut on the lower end I’d say but still a funny thing to look back on. I bet most older people wouldn’t know what it is anyway so you’re safe!
I had a coworker find me on good reads somehow (I don’t even use my real name) and saw ALL my deranged books and reviews, and they asked me in front of a bigger group about my reading habits. I’m into some weird shit (think extremely dark, fucked up romance and weird monster romance) and was absolutely mortified. I avoided them for weeks… and now I don’t have a picture and made up a different name for my page lol

Erica Jong (Fear of Flying) is your go to if you want to know all about it. If you watch Season 1 of Sex and the City, Carrie disses the author as “not interesting” presumably to distinguish herself as not writing “smut”. DM me for more useless literary knowledge before the law ruined my passion for actual literature. (Which Erica Jong is not, I just happened to read a profile of her by E. Jean Carroll, who before she sued Trump was known as a journalist and advice columnist, before Elle Magazine fired her). See? Useless knowledge.
Hahahaha. Fourth Wing is smut. It’s the sex that makes a book smut. People will forget about this sooner than you will. I wouldn’t worry about it.
