Pushing for team promotions at my company is tough. The process is so inconsistent and not always fair (i.e., not based purely on merit). I wish I had more control! How much transparency is right when talking to my team about their promotion track? I fear that if I'm just "corporate," I'll break their trust if expectations aren't met. Is it better to manage expectations realistically up front? I worry about them losing their motivation and looking for work elsewhere.

Transparency doesn’t mean telling them everything’s rigged... it means helping them understand the landscape and where they stand. I’ve found people stay more motivated when they know I’m being real with them, even if the process isn’t fair.

Of course it’s not based solely on an individual’s merit. There has to be an opening at the next level or significant business growth that supports expanding headcount at the next level. For companies that have solid employee longevity with minimal attrition and a business model that results in only marginal growth, it’s assumed to be a negative for career advancement. That’s the trade off, job security vs advancement. Time to educator and manage your team’s expectations. It’s not an individualistic game.

I’ve been fully utilized starting ~June, but first few months were slow. Am i fine?!

Welp! Finally got the axe today too. I didn’t even get to talk to my manager. One of the execs I support told me he’s very sorry and I was great, etc etc, but it couldn’t be avoided. Whatever. I kind of never want to work again. I’m heartbroken.

Any particular segment of sales good for ex-finance? Currently 3 years in at fortune 100 bank on business development side (on commercial loan originations team but no commission/targets at the associate level, basically do credit analysis and build pitch books for the producers) This role has been great as I have gotten both analytical experience and tasted sales experience (I say taste bc I’m not the producer) but would potentially like to transition to a sales role that is less analytical
