Basically law firm life is about working really hard on something you’ve probably never done before. Looking at samples, staying up all night to get it right etc. and if you miss a comma partner will think your work product sucks and you will never hear from him again lol Or if they have a different writing style same result. Ot whatever. There’s no training or learning from experience or chance to improve. You are lucky if you work for an actual human being who tells you thanks but next time try this or that or someone who is not a control freak and let’s you have a voice in the work product.
In my experience most partners won’t tell you, particularly if you are in a mid-size or larger firm. They will just stop giving you assignments and go to someone else. In a transactional practice, if a partner is rewriting your language consistently either the partner is anal and only likes his/her language, or your writing is deficient or missing major concepts. I encourage you to ask, not in the moment if it is too emotionally charged, but at another time. Bring the last set of comments you got and ask: am I missing concepts? Am I where you would expect given my year? What are the key areas I should focus on to improve? A good firm has this built into its review process but if yours doesn’t then create it for yourself.
Comments are normal. Some editors like word smithing more than others. Partners/Senior Associates will tell you if you need improvement. Have you had a formal review yet?
We are a mid sized firm and don’t have a formal review process, at least as far I know... I’m a second year (almost third) and have never had one.
In that case, you might want to ask for feedback on submissions when your supervisor has some free time. It’s important to be proactive if there isn’t a formal review. Are the redlines substantive?
