Reasons why I will never work for another law firm again… my referral fees were never paid fully or on time. My managing partner was POS and never learned how to be a leader. My physical office was way too small and I could hear everything around me when I needed to focus. They took months to make policy changes that should have taken one day. They had other BS policies of why we couldn’t ask paralegals to do certain things like prepare a case update. They acted like we were “family.”

Pivoting from five years of insurance defense litigation at a mid-size firm to family law in a small/boutique firm (3 partners and about 4 associates). What do you wish you knew when you first entered the field? Any advice is appreciated! So excited for this leap of faith into what I truly believe is my calling.

People who work in any engineering capacity are usually very hardworking but it's not just because we have to be, it's also that we find this stuff really fascinating, kind of like a book you can't put down

Does anyone know how litigation finance works on the plaintiff side? We have motion sensor lights in my office and the sensor is far from my desk. Consequently, if I'm on a long WebEx, the lights go out and it's embarrassing. The building won't change the sensor. Layoffs. Most big firms say they're sitting on a conservative pile of cash - which I believe is true - but work will obviously not return to pre-COVID levels in the short term, probably not even in the medium term. Are Biglaw layoffs coming?

I am a new (lateral) associate at a small firm where everyone currently works from the office. When I started, I wasn’t told specific firm hours. I’ve tried to figure out when to come and go based upon when the partners arrive and leave, but their schedules are very inconsistent. The other associates don’t have helpful guidance for me. Assuming that if I ask the partners they’ll say to use my discretion, what are reasonable hours to keep?
