I wish a good business writer would publish a well-reported piece on the recruiting industry. I'm honestly curious about some of their practices and how they operate behind the scenes. The ghosting seems to have become pretty common. What's mystifying is that recruiters come out of the woodwork and talk a good game, get your attention, and then vanish. I guess part of it is just the normalizing of gratuitous rudeness in society in the past decade. But part of it does seem to be an ill-considered strategy.
I feel like recruiters must have an interviewing quota. They aren’t looking to fill a position. They are interviewing people to stay in practice for when there is a real job opening.
There are good recruiters and bad ones. Those that reach out and tell you you’re a great fit for a role, get you excited about the role, and then nothing… are just bad at their job. They certainly aren’t thinking about building long-term relationships and possibly working with you in the future, either to fill positions at your current company or help you land your next position. Not to mention the referrals you can offer when they’re looking to fill a role.
This seems to be the new norm. I have worked with recruiters in the past who were reliable, communicative, and truly concerned with finding the right role for you.
For you recruiter out there, it does take but a second to send an email to a candidate to inform them of their candidacy status with a role you introduced them to!! Even if they weren’t chosen. A little feedback goes a long way.
