lol I had the same experience. I applied to roles I was over qualified for all of them with 100+ applicants. Then the roles would stay open for months. I stopped using LinkedIn and started going directly to company websites and signing up for job alerts and had a much better experience.
Yes, HR directors have outwardly admitted to posting “rolling” listings so they can farm resumes and build candidate pools. Something needs to be done about all of these ghost jobs. Having all these postings but no intention of hiring is what makes job seekers look “lazy” to boomers when they are applying to 100+ listings a week without a peep back.
Just because there are 100 applicants doesn’t mean they are qualified. It’s market specific though, I’ve been looking for about 3 weeks, with about 2 of those seriously searching, and have started getting traction.
I usually don’t apply for roles that have 100+ applicants though unless I am a very good fit. I try to filter for jobs that were posted less than 7 days ago and tend to prioritize jobs posted within 72 hours.
What about those that hit apply but never actually apply? I do this sometimes just to read job descriptions because I'm nosey.
We've had a Senior Tax Position out there for over 2 months and haven't even come close to filling it. Either they have no experience at all or expect $120k. I'm trying to be creative thinking of ways to use AI so we don't have to fill it. 🤣
Maybe but this person was not worth $120k either. Lol. In reality how many seniors make that? Hard to believe that's the average for a Senior.
I've been actively looking for almost 7 months. I know I don't have much experience so I haven't been applying for jobs I know I'm not qualified for. I've applied to about 1000 jobs by now and I've gotten about 2 dozen first interviews, maybe one or two second interviews. One company hired me as a temp through a recruiter but I was informed on my way home the first day that they reevaluated their needs and no longer needed a second temp.
The manager was out of the office that week and the team lead didn't know I was coming until I called her when I got there. They had nothing set up for me to work or train. I saw it giving me some access to a few things on my computer, but the team lead kept saying they would have my laptop set up the next day and I would start training then. I spent about 7 hours looking at their website. Team lead told me at 4 to go ahead and leave early. Big smiles and a "I'll see you tomorrow so we can start your training." Only to make the recruiter tell me they changed my mind. I left tic-tacs and a pen in the drawer at my desk lol
Btw, it was a very well-known company with a lot of perks for their employees

I saw someone share a stat that accounting as a whole was sitting at only 1% unemployment. I find that very hard to believe with what I see on here and LinkedIn with people actively searching.
I am confident that the real rate is higher and the underemployment rate is far higher than that. I think a ton of people are actively looking for a better role and that is part of the application volume.

You see so many applicants to every position so surely the 1% figure can’t be accurate

I sometimes wonder how many of these job opening people are seeing on the various job boards are even real jobs, and not fake or ghost jobs.
Most of the time, if I see a role on one of the job boards (like LinkedIn, Indeed, etc) I will go to that company's website and see if I can find that job there, and apply through there. There has been times when I have seen a job posted on one of the job boards, and it's been there for at least 2-4 weeks, and when I go to that company website, the job listing is not there.
