Senior partners: call me naive, but I really believed I was in a collaborative and low-ego firm. Lately, male partners have been repackaging some of my biggest ideas as their own and cutting me out. In fact, they just talked over me or brushed me off when I first shared and invited them to collaborate. Now that it seems they were good ideas after all, no credit or invite in sight. Don’t worry, I’ve got plenty more.
How have you navigated building influence while playing it closer to the vest?

Can we really leave every time men disrespect us? This was two men from two different groups and offices who probably don’t even know each other. It’s honestly not a culture thing specific to this firm, it’s a culture thing specific to men.

Just keep your ideas to yourself and between you and the client. Maybe this is a hierarchy thing since you're counsel.

Can you share a general description of one of these ideas, and how it was appropriated, to help brainstorm strategies?

If it’s a fact you spotted or a legal argument you created, for instance, I would convey such information in writing, and consider copying the client. In other words, keep it in writing, put your name on it, and don’t share it only with these guys.

You’re clearly very talented and entrepreneurial. It’s the cutting you out of the income stream that is worrying here. How can one possibly grow a business with colleagues who can’t be trusted?

Personally, I would try to move to another firm into a partnership role, and take these great BD ideas with you.

Move forward with executing on your ideas in stealth mode. There’s no reason you need to seek permission or approval from anyone else male or female. By announcing your ideas to the group without a plan for implementation, it could be misinterpreted as you asking for help or not being willing or confident enough to execute on them yourself. Law firm colleagues are cutthroat in that way if they sense you lack the wherewithal to take your ideas to the finish line. I learned this the hard way.

The week of my wedding, my husband (PL SQL Developer 4 yoe) was laid off. That was a couple of weeks ago. Luckily I'm still bringing money in as a software engineer, but I'm looking for advice on how to support a partner who has been laid off. Ultimately I think we will be ok, but I know he's hurting / stressed / and could use a supportive partner.
