I did pivot into estate planning and trust and administration work, first by getting my LLM in taxation, then working in a very small estate planning firm, where I took as many continuing education courses as I could and read what I could to understand all provisions in every estate planning document, and the choices around each.
Is that your area of practice now?
In A3s defense, there have been several postings with this same question by attorneys who view this area as a low hanging fruit, easy to step into without real training, kind of area of law. As someone who works in this area, it is very hard to see clients come in with EP documents that have been completely botched by an attorney that knows nothing. It's a very emotional and intimate area of law, at least for me. I truly care about making sure my clients are taken care of and well served. This area lacks competent attorneys, it doesn't lack incompetent attorneys. You are right that we are all attorneys, but like all areas of law you need training to do it, and arguably more training than other areas of law, and some attorneys dont get that. If someone is willing to put the time and effort in to become competent, then that's highly encouraged. But the last thing we want is another incompetent attorney thinking they can just draft documents for people without getting proper training. Because A3 is correct, a large portion of my business is fixing sh*tty EPs and I don't like doing that, for many reasons, including liability reasons. Honestly, I actually thought I wrote A3s comment because it sounds just like my thoughts lol
