I figure in this climate it is an easier sell than a direct admit, and I am ok with that. 😉
If you’re talking big4 MD then you’re a second class citizen and you’re unlikely to get out of that purgatory short of leaving for a non-B4 firm.
Know your value. If you’re confident in your ability to sell, target the equivalent of a partner role no matter where you go.
Which industry sector do you specialize in?
CPG/Retail, and work with adjacent industries like Retail Banking, Consumer Tech, Pharmacy, Telecom (basically organizations/engagements with consumer and/or retail considerations). Part of my skill set is taking learnings cross industries.
Very difficult environment right now. The order board for equity/non-equity partners is very focused on specific skills and gaps right now and is very limited. Strategy and business improvement is a fairly stable practice area with a solid pipeline of rising leaders so unless you have a direct personal re;action ship with a senior leader who can pull you in this is going to be a long, hard road.
Couple of key pieces to the puzzle are missing in your post. Whee in the world are you, and what salary/income expectations do you have?
I don’t want to pour cold water on your ambitions. I would just caution that with US economic growth projected at a low 1.8-2.2% most firms will be planning very conservative growth. If you covert that into 3-5% leadership level turnover/growth then the number of internal candidates ready to move up is going to be more than adequate to drive growth. And each of those people is a known entity. Now if you are willing to relocate overseas there are some strong growth markets that would take a US experienced market maker, you’d have to find someone able to open those doors.
You’d need to get an inside track somehow to get a real shot. At the best of times these processes can take 12-18 months. I’d make sure you have a Plan B.
