If your firm is asking summers to make those cringey self-aggrandizing acceptance posts on LinkedIn. Can you kindly ask they stop immediately?

I am humbled and honored to announce… 🤮

likefunny

It makes me lol too, but I don't get the hate. It's LinkedIn. That is where you make professional announcements (if you're so inclined). I feel like the people who hate on this also take it upon themselves to contrive and announce all these arbitrary rules for posting on other social media (IG, etc.). People can and should post what they want, when they want. Full stop. You're welcome to hide, unfollow, or whatever.

@A4 – I agree with you re: humbled.

like

So glad I went through the OCI and summer program process years and years ago before this was a thing. It’s just absurd.

like

I would agree buts it’s LinkedIn. LinkedIn is literally there only for this type of content lol just don’t go on the platform

like

I agree with A1. The only reason to go on LinkedIn is for the cringe content.

I hate LinkedIn so much.

Agree?

like

I would be fine with it but for the cringe lead-in, e.g., I am thrilled/honored/humbled blah blah. Just get to the damn point.

like

Yeah. This is fair. I’m not much of a social media person so I have never announced anything on LinkedIn (though I have one), but I wouldn’t mind so much “I’ve accepted a summer associate position at X and look forward to next summer.” But the “I’m humbled” ridiculousness … for an internship you’re starting in ten months … is so goofy.

Ffs I just saw this for the first time today

like

Agree. But then I realized these kids just got offered a job starting $225k, most under 30. Not my style, but that’s exciting for them. Whatever, they can have their moment

like

I think those posts are e extremely based. These kids just got offered a life changing career that will leave them better off than millions of people. I think a self congratulatory post is well within reason. I love to see em prosper!

Im a third year and my current firm isn't bad and I'm pretty comfortable here. Im satisfied most of the time. There is one firm I've been keeping my eyes on because of its similarities to where I currently am (nice people, similar hours, culture).

Im a bit burned out now and I would love to take a long break. I'm hoping I can take a break (2 months) between the transition but is this a good reason to move though? Would you move in my situation? Im sure there will be a signing bonus.

I’m a 9th year in a mostly litigation-based practice group at a one-tier partnership firm. My group’s billable hours have been low the last few years, so making partner will be nearly impossible, and a counsel position is not viable long-term in my group. What’s the best option here if partnership is the ultimate goal? Try to get a NEP/counsel position at another firm, which is likely difficult in my market, or offer to take a class cut by a few years?

Loan payment question. I have two federal loans. One has no accumulated interest and is ~$110k. One has about $19k of accumulated interest (I previously made an embarrassingly low amount of money), but the total is ~$140k. While the interest is still frozen, do I: 1) make payments on the $110k principal amount only to maximize driving it down; 2) make payments on the $140k principal amount only to maximize driving it down; 3) make payments on the $19k of interest on the $140k loan; or 4) ??

What is your typical total time “working” vs. time billed? I think I must be doing something wrong, because I’m having 12 hour days but only billing 7-8 hours/day. I can’t block bill so I lose a lot of time switching between tasks and reading random emails and don’t want to put down a million .1s for reading emails, but still seems weird to be losing so much time. I’ll take quick breaks throughout the day but nothing I’d expect to total more than hour. At a loss here.

How do I know Big-Law is not for me?

I am a first year who just started a couple of months ago and I am literally confused all the time. I did some small work for two partners and they loved it, so put me on new deals but the mid levels I am staffed with absolutely hate the work I do. One said the work I did was laughable. I felt bed because I spent over 25 hours on this. I wouldn’t be very bothered but the other Associates in my class are killing it. So I just feel dumb all the time.

Has anyone moved away from NY and successfully resigned from the NY bar? What are the consequences if you just don’t pay? The requirements are insane to officially “resign” - draft a motion, pay a fee, send proof of service - I honestly do not know what this nonsense means, I’m not a litigator for a reason. Is there someone I can pay to do it? Should I just pay the $375 to stay active to avoid this nightmare?
