So I signed an offer letter and now I’m being asked to sign a 20 month non-compete limited to the specific industry the company operates in. Can I turn around and ask for more comp/more equity? I’m kind of blindsided by it and not sure how to handle.

ABA Model Rule 5.6 prohibits non-competes for lawyers. Don't sign it or ask for a carve-out if it covers other stuff too

If you’re in the U.S. (and being hired for an attorney role) this company’s standard HR form is inapplicable to the licensed attorneys. Don’t sweat it. Don’t sign and just let them know you’re not allowed to sign.

If you’re not being hired into an attorney role, you still have to push back but it could be dicier…

I wouldn’t worry about it. Even if you sign it would not be enforceable to the extent your actually practicing law.

Recently hired an admissions consultant and based off of our consultation she was great. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a ton of non-gmat club/PQ feedback on her but I went with my gut and moved forward. What is the best way to get the most out of my experience with her? I am starting from the ground up for R1.

Once you get into a FAANG company, is it better to stay where you are or move around? I’m a dissatisfied with my current job but I have vesting stocks, work 9-5, and people to know and respect me. Anyone switch companies and either regret it or are glad they did?

Received a job offer. Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a concern I had about it. It's an entry level position, and I don't have much experience. The billables are 2040 a year. For billable hours in civil litigation and insurance defense, is 2040 hours for a 1st year associate on the high end in this field for a small or midsize firm? It seems like most attorneys I know have minimum requirements of around 1800. The compensation is around 80k a year.

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

Any downsides to leaving a “Counsel” role and moving into a “Legal Affairs” role? Still practicing and representing the company, just a difference of titles, so core work remains the same - what do you think?

I’m in-house at a small company (60 people), started right out of law school about 5 years ago. We had a legal team of 5 then. Everyone has left and we just hired a new GC. I went from $70k to $100k a little over a year ago. I am expecting an offer from a firm doing business law work but think this might be an opportunity to go to my current employer and ask for a significant raise, with new offer in hand. Any thoughts or advice going into this?

When I moved in-house a year ago as a BigLaw mid-level, I took a 45% pay cut, far more than I was comfortable with (although I was fine with a 20-30% cut). I took the job because it was a great role and I was focused on making the jump in house and developing the skills I wanted, which required me moving away from my firm practice area. Now that my year-end review is coming up, how do I ask my company for a significant pay raise (not just a 2-5% inflation-matching raise)?

Has anyone been given an offer or received further movement on their application after a month or more from your last interview? Not sure if it’s odd that the company reached out after my final round interview to have a call and “discuss next steps” but then they haven’t responded to me since I’ve followed up (I’ve poked 3 times every 11 days or so but I plan to leave it be now until they respond).

Hello, hoping for some input on how to time a job change. At a startup - we are doing well now but unless we have complete turnover in management I don’t think we have a bright future post-COVID. I could coast here 1-2 years before having to look. I’ve been here for a little under a year. This is my second in house job after 10 years at the same firm. The market is hot now, probably won’t be in 1-2 years and I am getting interest for good roles. OTOH I don’t want to look like a job hopper.
