Received a job offer. Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a concern I had about it. It's an entry level position, and I don't have much experience. The billables are 2040 a year. For billable hours in civil litigation and insurance defense, is 2040 hours for a 1st year associate on the high end in this field for a small or midsize firm? It seems like most attorneys I know have minimum requirements of around 1800. The compensation is around 80k a year.

It’s too high for billables and too low for compensation. Seriously a rip off. Are they hiring slaves?

like

As a first year you should be starting at around 1800 hours. And around 80k for just over 2000 hours is too low. I get the firm is small but negotiate in the six figure range. I practice in ID and in general we are hurting for attorneys, so use that need to your benefit.

like

It’s a good question. At least where I practice salaries are all over the place, so attorneys are bouncing all over to get better deals. Many are going into plaintiff work, starting their own, etc. And with COVID, our practice never stopped and cases are getting pushed to trial more and more to help with the court back log. I think there’s a lot of burnout as a result.

Look at it like this. Good paralegals are at least 60k. And paralegals save our butts more than you know. But they didn’t have to do law school or lose years of their lives studying for the bar. That extra work you did is worth way more than 20k a year.

Billables too high and salary too low

Where r u located ? My friend works at an ID form 1900 hours 112k NY! Try to renegotiate the salary. But it depends on your location as well.

This is INSANELY high. It should be no more than 1900.

Hi guys,

I need some advice, I’ve been in a newly created role within a pharma agency for about three months now and it is not going too well. There is little to no structure or direction from senior leadership, no access to client data, little to no billable work. Worst of all, no project is related to what I have been hired to do.

I would like to move on with a different agency asap, but I’m not sure how to proceed with such a short time here.

Kind of nervous - never done a case interview and feel a little underprepared

Agency recruiters: do you participate in kick-off meetings with hiring managers?

My company thinks that’s not scalable for us to be in those calls. But I find it hard to speak enthusiastically about a job to candidates I interview when I never got to even hear the founders speaking about it themselves.

We have now agreed that I’ll get to see the recording of those calls. I’m not sure if that will suffice, though. Any thoughts on this?

My firm typically does insurance defense, but we take plaintiffs cases here and there. Is it typical that work done by associates on contingency cases isn’t counted toward their billable hour requirements unless and until we receive our fee on the case? This is my first experience with this, but it’s hard for me to reach my hours as is, without spending time on non billable cases like this with no assurance that I’ll see billable credit at the end.
