This is a reminder for you to start looking for a new job. If you feel you didn't deserve PIP, then start documenting all things you do, and all abuses they do to you, take this as a time to search for job while at the same time trying to get out of PIP and show you can do it. If you can have another top manager to support you or someone to review you positively, then that will help. But usually they want you out but trying to play it smart from legal wise. Additionally, if you feel you are discriminated for religion, sex, ethnicity, age [over 40] , retaliation, then document everything send it to your personal email and write down the times the incidents or abuse happened and later you can sew them. wish you the best
9 out of 10 times it's meant to shove people out the door, if the timeframe in which you have to accomplish it is unreasonable and/or what you have to do is unclear, then it's meant to get rid of you.
Stat recording/taking notes of meetings with your boss and HR. If anything fishy happens, those notes will help you take necessary action.

Sorry to hear. Power through it to a degree based on how you think the potential is.. your message sounds like that is high. If it was lower I’d say do it to a degree that allows you to prepare for interviews
As a software engineer I was always looking for another job.
I think you probably know already. If it's a toxic situation and you feel they're just trying to get rid of you, then I'd be looking. But if you feel like they truly do want you to be better at your job, there's hope. I think most managers don't want to let anyone go if they don't have to. Side note, a PIP is how I got into software...I was horrible at sales so they put me on a PIP...then needed sales reps to be user acceptance testers for a major portfolio conversion on the software we used...and the rest is history. So no, PIP's do not always end in termination. This is an opportunity for you to rise to the occasion and prove to yourself that you can do it. Don't just follow the plan, crush it and go above and beyond it so that there is no question as to whether or not you have succeeded.
TEKsystems1 nailed it. From personal experience, many years ago, I was once handed a PIP because I was blamed for something I was not responsible for, but the person with whom I worked (another department) was at least two levels higher than me. I was on that PIP for 6 months and lost my annual bonus and a raise. It was only because I had documentation to prove there was nothing I could have done better, and my manager fought like hell for me.
On a more recent note, my last job, and new manager issued a PIP two months after he started to work for the company, while I’ve been there for six years. I was offered the option of leaving on my own + 12 weeks paid, or work through the PIP. Naïvely, I chose to work through PIP - 3 weeks later (December 12th, 2025) I was let go due to trumped up BS. The assh*le had to do it it a week before Christmas. Took me 3 months to find another job, albeit with higher pay and more responsibilities. So, it was a kick in the behind I guess I needed.
Word of advice: always be proactive and avoid putting all your eggs in one basket. Become so valuable that you can easily transition to a new role or job by continuously upskilling and staying updated with emerging technology trends. The days of company celebrations with 25-year anniversary watches are long gone. Stay multifaceted & three-dimensional!
A PIP is them giving you an opportunity to find a new role. The threat of a PIP is them giving you more time.
Even if you "come off a PIP", it'll follow you everywhere at that company. You'll be passed for promotions, you'll be the first to get laid off, and chances are you'll end up back on a PIP.
If they do fire you then suddenly when you do try to get jobs the background check will fail as they'll be allowed to say you're not re- hireable anytime someone calls them.
I normally would say go start negotiating for severance, but in this economy it's impossible to get a job.
If you do decide to negotiate for severance, ask them to pay for cobra health coverage for you for an extended time, push out your end date as far as possible, and find out how much people who have been laid off for and demand more + sick time + pto. If the company is public, ask them to give you any stock (options or RSU's) that hasn't accrued yet.
