Does anyone in this group have ADHD? Are you finding that working in a law firm setting and billing hours is just not something they can do or is it possible with the proper medication and therapy?

I don’t cut my hours, I consistently reach 7 hours a day, but it’s not enough to meet my firm’s minimum requirement. I’m usually working 9 hours/day.

I strongly believe it would be possible with the proper medication and therapy - also try journaling your thoughts, whether they’re work related or not try jotting down a mind map to de clutter your mind. Journaling when you’re feeling overwhelmed helps too; it takes a load off you and you can get back to work with a clearer mindset. Lastly; set goals for the end of the week or month to get you going and stay motivated. Treat yourself when you reach your goals it’s very rewarding. Goodluck!

I have adhd and honestly with my medication and therapist I am able to manage it better. Not to say it isn’t difficult sometimes lol.

I just started on vyvanse and it’s helping it isn’t a magic pill but it’s helping

like

It is possible with medication, task list, billing as you go, and keeping a time tracker. The (1) medication helps keep me focused, (2) the task list shows me that I am accomplishing something, (3) billing as I go helps keep me organized and in control, and (4) keeping a time tracker ensures I am billing for every minute of my life that I use to think about someone else’s problem. 🤣

like

I do. Medication and therapy are big helps.

But real talk, I transitioned from in-house to big law a year ago, and the billable hour is a struggle. I should also note I’m a transactional attorney (not corporate), so I’m all ears if anyone has tips on maximizing my billable time.

like

Also perhaps consider a different firm with different billable requirements? Or even possibly accommodations?

Junior big law litigator with ADHD combined type. Before meds, it took me 18 hours to bill 8-10. Now with meds, I can bill 6 hours in about 10. Still really difficult and sort of impossible, but more doable than before. but Managing partner knows about my condition and I think I’ve tricked him into thinking that my low hours are because I’m having a hard time finding long term work.

I have to express my fears somewhere. I think I failed both my graduate classes (teaching math and the other was Climatology fundamentals). My fault I know, so much going on at work caused me to be to tired that I struggled staying awake to eat dinner! My fault I didn’t express this stress and missed a few assignments. And you know what else stress does- makes it hard to learn and retain. If our students feel that way…that explains many things. Prayers that I did well and don’t fail.

I'm 6 months old at D! Planning early promotion next year.. counselor and pm both are backing me.. I need to go to India for at least 4 weeks in Dec ... most probably would be rolling off from current project by then .. would this vacation hurt my promotion chances coz of utilization etc?

Is Federal/Public Sector consulting fulfilling work? I'm at a tier 2 consulting firm right now focused on retail clients, and I just feel like there is zero point to this work. Its all about increasing sales of a product that people could easily live without. As an Associate, I just move boxes around on PPT slides all day. Looking for better WLB and fulfillment in my work, thinking that might be Public Sector work.

How does a person change their mindset to be more positive? I feel like I’m meant for my job, but blame all my life problems on it….having no energy, being single at the age of 30, etc. and it seems like a never ending loop. I look for new jobs, realize I have a good job then am ok for a bit then start it all over again. When I’m off of work I’m fine and realize I have it pretty good. Only real negative is I can’t vacation with my family in March due to my busy time.

Someone on LinkedIn expressed disappointment about the lack of diversity from the big law firms in TX that were posting pics of their summer associates. A managing partner commented that he thought the post might be about a pic he posted (12/14 SAs were white). He tried to defend this by saying that they had LGBT and socioeconomic diversity. The fact that he recognized that his pic might be part of the problem says it all. Law firms need to do better. Sorry, I just wanted to rant.

Kind of a quick rant. I did a quick search through some firms websites because I am thinking of switching jobs. It is definitely clear most firms still do not embrace diversity. I know diverse applicants must be just as qualified! So what is keeping attorneys of color out?? It’s so discouraging.
