Has anyone gone from BigLaw to start their own successful corporate/commercial law firm? How’d that go for you? In hindsight, would you do it all again? I worked at a boutique before joining BigLaw and the partners at the boutique seemed very happy/comfortable with their lifestyle, and they said they get paid more than when they were partners at a mid-tier firm.

Why isn’t there an advertising union to help control the hours demanded by our industry?

What are of the ways you “manage up”? I work for a couple partners who rely on me heavily to handle things from start to finish, but I’m still a bit junior (3rd year) and I need them to be able to answer questions and review my work sometimes. They don’t mind doing this, they’re just juggling a lot and I want to help them help me without interrupting their schedules too much.

How do you feel when your manager tells you “You are a senior and you should know this.” ? My stress level is very high whenever my manager says that and it doesn’t matter if I actually know it or not. When I hear that, I just always feel stupid and that I’m not supposed to ask questions. The manager probably doesn’t mean it but I just always get nervous and can’t control myself thinking like that.

I work with a first year that sends really lengthy emails that are filled with unnecessary formalities (e.g. “per the terms set forth therein”). I just want them to get to the point, especially because most of the questions are pretty basic. I had to read one email 4 times to get what they were trying to say. Suggestions?

I’m in my late 20s and broke up w my bf 2 months ago as we were ready to take the next steps. His family didn’t approve of me and he didn’t fight for me hard enough so I honestly don’t have any regrets.

How good are your districts at negotiating contracts on time? Ours expire every two years. At the end of the second year we always end up going into the next school year on an expired contract and work almost the entire school year on that expired contract. It’s not that we are asking for the moon, usually our raise is about the same as the rising price of healthcare, so it ends up being a wash. The workload only increases.The district also made us put in a “no strike” clause in our contract.
