You only attend your own retirement party, with your ECD and HR.
So many “laid off” happy hours tho
It’s because no one retires. They get laid off
None in 25 years of agency life.
Same number of years, same result.
One But that was back in the 80’s at DDB Needham.
Zero point zero
Mr. Blutarsky. Zero POINT zero.....
None. They all leave in their 40’s and pursue another career, or laid-off
Once, and it was the receptionist who retired.
I don’t think retirement parties are a good yardstick for this career. Like, my dad had one, but he was with the same company over 30 years. Ad people move around too much. You don’t keep in touch with all the same people And when does freelance end, really?
Started 21 years ago. Only one retirement party...in 1999
Publicis had a “We finally forced out a partner” party when they got rid of Kaplan-Thaler a few years ago, and attendance was mandatory for all NY employees.
In 30 years, I’ve only witnessed one person officially “retire.” When the inevitable downturn comes, agencies will always lay-off the more expensive, older employees. What people in this industry don’t realize is older employees aren’t getting fired for their age. They are getting fired for their higher salary. Who would you fire, a 28 year old team who makes 175k total... or the solo 40 year old ACD who’s making 175k? It’s financial, not about age. Clients crush our margins, so we’re forced to keep the lower salaries and cut the higher ones.. business.. it’s a bitch. Employees don’t realize how cutthroat it is and how the next agency will undercut you to win the account. It’s extremely competitive.
An actual retirement party...1. "Retirement Parties"...too many to count
Never and in the industry in usa and abroad since 1999
Not a one. In nearly 2 decades. No gold watches either.
None. Twenty-one years here
Not a single one, and I’ve been doing this for 24 years.
