Advice: Stop interviewing to prove you’re qualified. Your qualifications already got you the interview. Start interviewing to solve the company’s problems.
Those sound similar, but they’re completely different mindsets.
I was trying to ensure they understood everything I’ve done instead of speaking to them that they should believe hiring me makes their job easier.
That advice changes every response.
For example, instead of saying what I did, I flipped it to something more like, “It sounds like you’re growing quickly and need someone who can get up to speed without a lot of hand-holding. That’s actually where I’ve had the most success. At XXX, I joined a support team, was promoted to an escalated team within eight months, and eventually became the person people came to for the difficult issues.”
I don't know if I'd say it 'flipped my script', but this definitely changed my opinion on how I interview people and in turn I am interviewed.
Keep in mind I already took going to a job interview seriously. After these experiences made me double down on the prep.
I had two interviews. The first, the guy was in a t-shirt (obviously dirty), shorts (probably dirty), and flip flops. It was an in-house IT position.
The second, the guy was in a gym hoodie sweatshirt and thread bare jeans. This was an office admin position.
After that I made my mind up, no matter what side of the table I'm on, I'm going to show you the respect you deserve. Dressed appropriately, mentally and physically prepped as much as possible, and not just winging it.
In both cases, I'm glad it didn't work out because neither of them are still in operation.
It definitely sounds like you dodged a bullet!
Tbh none. I think you need to realize that they want to hear one "right" answer and sometimes it's not easy to guess what they will like. It doesn't matter if there's different ways of doing things,
Understanding that the interviewer may be just as nervous as you are. They may have just context switched from another problems or not done as much reading about you. I think the other thing is knowing how to act. "Tell me about yourself" is not a time to dive into your irrational fear of spoons. Know something about the job, give something related and listen for questions.
I just pictured someone playing spoons on their leg. 🤷🏻♀️😂
I honestly can't say I would disagree with the way a team would operate when changes have to move the way a person thinks vs the way to portray their job.
