Unfortunately, the job market is offer as little as the market will bear. So, if they can find staff at $16-$21 per hour that do the job well, they'll keep paying that. If they can't find good staff, or turnover is too high, they'll offer a little more until they find the spot where they are paying the least they can for good staff. This is why unions work- they prevent employers from finding a few people willing to work for cheap since the staff has to be in the union and they can negotiate a more fair rate of pay. Absent of that, if you want more, you have to chase the money to a better, less competitive location.
We pay about $14 an hour to our designers in Pakistan. They do a great job. Unfortunately, I think this is kind of the direction people are going either AI or overseas for graphics.

Yeah outsourcing this work seems to be the future. Gone are the days of in person design teams based in head offices!

As a designer/marketer/creator/et al... there is no way on God's green earth (including other continents) that I'm gonna allow someone to think they're making a DIME off MY work so that they can make a profit while pushing SCRAPS on the floor for me to LIVE off of...in. this. economy.
(Insert snap here) Your artistry, mastery, concepts, skill, talent, product, and ownership of said "content" is PAYING THEIR BILLS. If someone who treats you lesser wants to play "king of the hill" by disrespecting and abusing you, you're allowing them to keep you down from recognizing the real VALUE/WORTH you have to offer. I speak from experience.
You are a GENERATOR. Find a partner if need be (vs alone) to work along side you for brainstorming and accountability as you BUILD together. Get outta your comfort zone of clocking in and out and start networking. Your current boss isn't the only one who needs work done.
Even if you take a season of working in a different position to get your head and schedule free so that you can pursue knowledge, more skills and a network...it'll be worth it. INVEST in yourself. Get your OWN tools and software, create your own BRAND and SELL YOURSELF....NOT your seed and fruit of products and services.
South Florida has got them some MON-EY. So. Nuff said. This ain't Pakistan. Find a way to PIVOT and research companies that are (STILL) paying for real talent. If you're able and equipped to provide the overwhelming scope of the "position" that technically morphs about five positions into one, then I think it's about time you get a goal of creating your own agency.
Mind you: Agency refers to a business or organization providing specific services (e.g., advertising, employment, or government agencies) or the fiduciary relationship where an agent acts on behalf of a principal. It also defines the capacity of individuals to act independently, make free choices, and influence their own lives.
This may be more than the response you were asking for, but let it be said. Pat yourself on the back (I'll do it virtually, feel that?!) and take the step. Push or be pushed. Step or get stepped. Pay or get PAID. Don't sell yourself short. And DEFINITELY, don't take no $16-21/hr position (not that you were planning to). This is just a word to encourage your search. Search yourself. Find your niche and THAT you CAN be SERIOUS about.
