I think it’s much like a parent when they hand out idle threats or 1/2 threats, it often empowers the other party (child in this case) bc they learn your word is based on fluff. This is why there can be SO much pushback when you start to try and follow through. Also, most of these kids have no follow through at home either.
I was one of those parents that made idle threats/threats I just couldn’t follow through with when my 3 boys were younger. I finally read this book about positive discipline in which it noted (in addition to other things) that the Follow Through is actually much more important than how long the consequence runs or it’s severity. I took this and ran w it. I gave consequences that I could follow through with, w/out losing my ever lovin mind. By the time they got to HS, you better believe me that when I told them -you will not get the car if you do this or that again, they listened (for the most part lol).

Kids need external limits until they can master internalizing those limits. It’s a good thing.

Our principal told us that we couldn’t put zeros in the grade book. Not being a computer guru, I researched how to code comments to reflect a zero value because I absolutely refused to allow the rot of the unmotivated to spread and consume an entire class or team.
I will say that most of the parents actually checked grades weekly because we were required to post weekly. They began to inquire about the codes’ meanings, so I posted a key. It worked a lot better than leaving all those blanks in the grade book😈, and my students’ state exam scores reflected that increased participation.
And remember: Teachers don’t threaten students; we make solid “promises” that we must keep🤔

I stopped giving zeros. Work or done is grade DNC- Dind not couplets. Cheating AI Academic integrity. Count as zeros, but more accepted for whatever reason

Euphemisms! You’re so right, they soften things.

Academic Integrity=cheating.

So when my husband cheated on me it was called “marital integrity.” 😂

How do these codes calculate into a grade? Do you leave the mark blank and the code calculates the zero?

Google forms make for great exit tickets. Of course this only works if your students all have a device. Hard copy exit tickets can become unmanageable, depending on class sizes and frequency.

I can manage my classroom better if I don’t respond to emails outside of office hours. This gives my mind a break and by consequence refreshes me for the next day. It also sets a boundary.
