Has anyone tried breathing exercises with their students to help them calm down at the start of class?

Everyday. It calms me too. Smile when the goody kid gasps for air or makes a silly sound. Afterward, ask them to notice what they were doing: talking, writing, moving…just notice…no shame…then challenge to be still next time.

I do when we need to. I call for us to take a "Zen-moment" and we breathe to our zoom recording timer for 30 secs in counted breathes. In and out. Then we return to our work.

YES!! Kids are better prepared when their brains and bodies are calm, and breathing exercises help that immensely. Especially for little learners—it helps to develop that instant reaction to their emotions. They can better stop, think, then act.

Rant. This guy I have been talking to started making me feel bad about who I am and my roots. About how not American I am. He started calling me odd. I blocked him but now I feel inadequate.

Brigadeiro are scrumptious dulce de leche caramel bonbons, a beloved confection of Brazil. Brigadeiro is made from sweetened condensed milk, butter, and cocoa powder which is heated in a saucepan until it thickens and becomes a sticky caramel. Once it cools, it is rolled into a ball and dipped in multicolored sprinkles.

The iconic bonbon was named after Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes, a 1946 presidential candidate. It was created to win voter support. (He lost).

Are there any good PM certification that’s worthwhile? Not something that’s on Udemy for 2 hours of coursework.
Most “certifications” I’ve seen seem a bit superficial… but my current PM job feels like a glorified project manager role so I was hoping to use my extra time to study/earn a certificate to show my skill. If possible.

Start each class with a few seconds of stillness. It takes consistent practice. Most students will blurt something silly out after about 4 seconds. Expect it and smile. After time is up ask students to notice what they were doing during that time. No shame. Notice and strive to be more still next.

1. Hands, feet, mouth, arms, legs still (a veritable challenge)
2. Close the eyes.
3. Long exhales to bring in the calming chemical acetylcholine.

I have a burning question. I have been teaching for over 18 years, which nags me.

Suppose you agree that the provided professional development offered through our districts is ineffective. Why not invest in your professional development by seeking a coach or mentor or even pay for professional resources that would help? To put it plainly, why don't we educators invest in our professional development?
