There’s a lot that’s context dependent. Sundress might be appropriate if we’re taking about SoCal. Also what is the evening event - attending a baseball game would be different than a nice dinner. My firm retreat is in the Midwest in September and our dinner attire was dressy business casual, or what I’ve called in the past “business cocktail.” Nicer than day to day wear but a little more business-y than cocktail attire.
Sadly I’ve thought about this a lot. I’ve settled on 1) don’t show any part of your body you don’t want people looking at 2) wear shoes you can tolerate for the entire event. If you have trouble picking out tasteful clothes that meet these criteria (and I do) there are stylists at sale and Nordstrom who will help out an outfit together for no fee, including accessories.
It’s totally dumb that we think about this stuff at all but it’s a job and there are idiots at all jobs and idk about you but I’d rather not have a conversation with a male partner while he talks to my boobs.

A sundress is not evening wear. Check out revolve.com, they will guide you accordingly.
…there is literally nothing from Revolve that I would consider wearing to a law firm event.
The dress isn’t evening attire. There isn’t a cocktail party or something like that. It’s just dinner and drinks at the end of a long day of meetings, and most people change their clothes.
Depends a lot on where the retreat is and what your activity is. Would error on the nicer side…
