I’m a junior in big law and in the short time I’ve been here, I’ve noticed that counsels produce perfect drafts and yet aren’t partners but partners can’t write two sentences without numerous typos. Shouldn’t counsels be partners and partners counsels instead?

In my personal and unbiased opinion, yes.

Do you ever think there’s more to life than being really really ridiculously good looking (producing drafts)?

At a lot of firms, counsel are technicians - their job is to act as super-senior associates. Partners have BD and other, non-substantive things to address. That's why they have associates and keep good ones around as counsel.

like

Right, one thing its easy to miss is how little partners draft - to the point of often very earnest excitement when on occasion they get to. It just doesn't make sense from a time / cost perspective. The cruelty of most jobs is you get good at stuff and then can't spend time on it anymore haha

Partners provide clients

There ain't gonna be any drafts to perfect without the partners generating that business tho. 🤑💸

such an innocent question 🥲

like

But if the partners are so bad at substantive skills, how do they get clients?

like

In most cases the partners have no clients of their own. That’s the dirty little secret of biglaw. And OP’s original point is why I direct most of my work to counsel or associates at some of my outside firms, rather than to the “relationship” partner.

Partners aren’t still aiming to make partner.

(Assuming not NEPs, who tend to have fewer typos than EPS).

At our firm, counsels are particularly terrible. But I think that’s unique to my firm.

I lateraled into a niche practice group in Sept 2021. I also have a 1 year old and have been mostly remote since I started - but have been keeping busy tracking towards 2400-2500 hours. That said getting to know people only remote has been kind of awkward at times (email only can be tough to decipher) although as a working mom the pros vastly outweigh the cons. Yesterday my main partner asked me to come in Thursday bc he will be there and set a time to meet. Is this good/bad?? kind of nervous!

First year associate and I may barely hit 1500 this year. Requirement is 2000, though i know first and some second years at my firm don’t hit it.

I am a in a small specialist group who has 2 partners, and they both give me work. One of them said to not worry about my hours (though they do not know how low of a number i’m projected for). Haven’t asked the other.

Should I be concerned?

Lateral that just went through first bonus season with the firm. Not in a major market but workload is comparable to major markets. Surprised at how low the bonus was. I received solid reviews and my annualized hours were well above the requirement. Should I approach anyone about this? Wondering if it is worth addressing or if it could compromise my standing.
