I have taught music for 37 years now, most of it in middle school. Over the years, I have had more good administrators than bad, thankfully.
I do demonstrate the instruments for kids who want to choose to play, but only those kids who are really interested sign up for band. If every kid is required to have band, does the district at least provide the instruments?
Thankfully, my current administration is hands off and trusts the staff to be professional and know their subjects. I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Not every kid is interested in playing an instrument, so they have no business being forced to be in band. I had an admin that required me to teach 4 general middle school classes a day to kids who didn't choose or want to be there. The way the schedule was set up I had a class of 40 with 30 boys and 10 girls. It was horrible.
Sorry just now replying to this. Now all the instruments were either broken, missing parts, or need a repair in some form. None of these kids cared or wanted to even learn an instrument because they had not had band all year as their original teacher left two months in and I came in February. Actually had to get a lawyer to null the contract because the job description said all kinds of things and in the interview they said I'd be able to recruit the students who wanted to be in band and the other students would be in general music. That was not the case. They were calling me a liar that the instruments were not broken and tried to write me up when I told them I got in contact with the previous director as they told me they didn't have their contact info but I found them on Facebook. Basically he documented the instrument were broken and the school called him a lair and refused to let him get them fixed. They also with held the budget from him fearing he'd use it wrongly and wouldnt let me know how much we had.
I had a student lash out and try to hit me, and the discipline coach crumpled up the slip I was writing for the student saying they were just playing with me. It was a bad situation.
I would ask the admin to demonstrate. That would be interesting and entertaining!
The principal told me she did sax for a week and quit because it was to hard. I looked at her and said so you had the choice to participate in band or not. Why don't you give these students that choice?
Her response - they have to learn in life as adults you don't get a lot of choices.
Me, an adult, I've never had the ability to make more choices on me own for myself in certain situations.
