Tell me your story of when you took a pay cut. Why did you do it? I’ve been thinking about going back to school to focus towards something a little different. But, without experience in that field, I fear I’ll have to take some sort of cut. Did it become something you were glad you did in the long run?

I haven’t had to take a paycut yet, but I am thinking about it. I guess a couple of things to reflect on - do you currently have others depending on you for a salary? How much less would the paycut be? Do you have some savings for emergencies? I’m starting to believe less in linear career paths and more in following curiosity, being aligned with purpose & exploration

Those are excellent questions to ask myself. That’s what makes it difficult - I have kiddos depending on me. So it’s a higher risk. I’m going to think on all of that.

Some good stories so far!

I haven't and have no intention of doing so. Having said that, I am currently employed, so there's no reason for me to. If I was out of work in this market, I'd quickly accept less than what I made at my last job just to get out of unemployment.

That’s a good point. I’m feeling stuck in my position. They say they want to promote me, but they don’t have enough work for me to prove I’m “worthy” of it. I see they’re rearranging our team though (new manager and who we report to). So, I’m needing some back up plan and it’s really a dead end job, to be honest

I took one once, to move into another career path. Don’t regret it!

Not too long, as I knew I didn’t want to do what I was doing long term. So against that backdrop, the newness, curiosity and learning of the new path were pretty cool. I was in my twenties though, no kids yet, so that helped.

like

I haven’t but I would be willing to if it meant I could live where I wanted and if the opportunity had more chance for advancement or if the company culture seemed better.

like

That’s definitely a good goal to have. I don’t think I have a chance to grow in my current position. I’d have to find a new job.

I took a pay cut when I moved into another field. It was worth it because I wanted to get out of IT and into healthcare. I now make more money than I was making before and I am much happier. Sometimes taking a pay cut is worth it.

That’s a story I want too!! I’m really struggling with the idea though. Glad it turned out great for you.

Hi everyone. Is it typical for the attorney to take credit for the work a paralegal does? An example: I gave some ideas about deposition questions and some observations I made (I was asked about giving suggestions) regarding a witness and the attorney mentioned that he’s the one that had these great questions/observations. Zero credit or thank you for the work I did.

Got offered 68k after 2 years as a contractor (62.5k) doing project management/business admin in a tech department at a Fortune 500 bank. I have an A.S degree and working on my bachelor’s/masters may 2024. I negotiated to 84k NYC. I have seen interns get offered 38 per hour (79k) for internship positions with a similar role.

Thoughts? Should I go higher? I do my job well that’s why they decided to keep me as a contractor after my internship.

I’m highly disappointed about the fact that whenever I talk to the HR teams or recruiters about joining bonus, they state there’s no provision. However, my male colleagues or ex co-workers who interviewed for the same position where offered a joining bonus. This has happened to me twice now and I’m starting to believe something is wrong in the system or there is some kind of biased against women at certain workplace.

Hello I’m curious on how to bring this to my supervisor attention. A few months back all the techs got a raise based on how long they have had been a tech. A coworker and I Both have been a tech for the same amount of years but she got 1.50 more than I did. How do I bring this up as the supervisor mentioned that we shouldn’t be talking about our raises.

My current job I make 150k plus a 20% bonus and an annual cost of living raise anywhere from 2-3.5%. Have been in my current position about a year. Things have been a bit bumpy (not a me issue) I have a new supervisor and was recently given 7 direct reports (I had zero before). The new position while comes with a significant raise is a move to California. Any thoughts?

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?

Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!
