The cafe down the street is hiring but they told me the first three days are a "voluntary trial" to see if I fit the vibe. No pay, just training. I told them my time has a price tag and the owner acted like I was being entitled. Since when did hospitality start expecting free labor just for the privilege of a shift? Does anyone actually agree to these trials or are we all collectively saying no to this nonsense now?

A 3-day unpaid trial shift is lunacy. I love doing volunteer work, so important for the community. But not like that.

Right. It’s a big concern that they can’t trust themselves to interview and make decisions.

Sounds illegal. In some states, they allow unpaid trial shifts, if they are short. But if they contribute significantly to the business (which this sounds like it will), it needs to be paid. Look into the laws in your state.

Absolutely—your time is worth being paid. “Voluntary trials” are basically unpaid labor, and it’s not on you to prove your worth for free. Hospitality shouldn’t be exploiting people under the guise of “fitting the vibe.” Stand firm—any decent employer will compensate you.

When the IRS (e.g., a RO/AO/Examiner) calls or writes a letter… How do you verify that it’s really the IRS and not a scam? I’m new to tax law and I’m worried that I’m going to respond to/answer a scam and give away client info (or my own tax preparer info). I don’t think my worry is unfounded due to the tremendous amount of tax/IRS scam out there but it would be nice to hear from some of y’all so that I’m not so worried about it…
