If the IRS wants to talk to you about a client but hasn’t asked you to fax a 2848 for the 500th time, then they are not the IRS.
During the audit period, it’s very rare that they just call you out of the blue. If they do, it’s either after they sent you a letter/fax or if you have a established working relationship. When it comes to tax court litigation, this becomes less of a worry as you know the name of the opposing counsel. I most often get random calls from the independent office of appeals to schedule meetings.
If they do call me at random, I rarely have an answer on the spot. I don’t recall every detail of my clients’ files and even if I do *feel* that I know the answer, I always need to verify the information.
A lot of the calls from the IRS come from a few centralized phone numbers, I just add them to the same contact and 8/10 times that works too
Oh and if all else fails, it’s completely fine to tell them that you haven’t received a letter or fax and to ask them for their fax number (that’s the only means of communication anyone at the IRS can engage in) or ask them to send you their request in writing.

I have never received a call from the IRS unless in the context of an ongoing audit and even then that is normally scheduled. For letters, you can tell they are real because they will request a response be sent to an address that can be verified as an IRS address.
